Expelled Mossad agent, Ronen, has disappeared following a failed assassination attempt on the life of the Hezbollah operative responsible for suicide bombings in Israel. Feared to be on an unauthorized mission that will bring catastrophe to his country, Ronen must be found and his former commander, Gadi, takes it upon himself to track him down. The resulting physical and intellectual scuffle between the two men becomes one of deeper, moral inquiry. "... high stakes, and the brutal complexity and fear of today's fragmented Middle East ... Ben-David delivers spy thrillers with all the authenticity and inside knowledge of an ex-Mossad agent." Simon Sebag Montefiore, author ofJerusalem The Biography

Disclosure: the author of this book Mishka (Moshe/Moses) Ben-David was a student of mine around 1979 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he studied for a degree in Comparative Literature and I formed a high opinion of his talents.Caution: This book is translated into British English, so some words may be unfamiliar to the American reader, e.g. "clapped out vehicles of workers"; understand: "worn out vehicles". Not a huge problem.
Mishka Ben-David is an enormously talented author, who spent a dozen years as an operative in Israel's Mossad (secret service) and uses his experience there to great effect in his writing to which he now devotes himself, rather than to espionage. Or so we are told. Duet in Beirut: A Thriller details the life and loves of a couple of spies, Udi and Ronen, as by turns they work with and against each other, and by turns obey and disobey their superiors. Duet in Beirut edition by Mishka BenDavid Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
Didn't feel this had much to offer either in dialogue or suspense!
Maybe it was written in Hebrew and lost something in translation?
Intelligent. Well written. Personal real humans. Real life as operator is hard. Nothing about hacking and remote operated hidden cameras and remote microphones. I think these do a lot of the survaillance today. Not exposing people.
A much better book than the St Petersburg book. Enjoyed this one and was kept going back to see how things would turn out.
This novel enters the thought and emotional dimensions of the characters in a way few spy novels have done. Simply excellent.
beginning of a promising series. One can benefit form the "insider" information. writing is OK, translation is fine.
After a promising start, this book settles down into what is basically a domestic situation. If you want to find out how Israeli intelligence works, read the first half of the book. If you are interested in a former Mossad agent trying to redeem his reputation, read the second half. Overall, this book could have been a lot better.
This was a very well written account of politics inside a police organization. Every recruit should read it. Read it and then decide if you really want that job where you must always watch your back. Politics is such a nasty business. There are no winners, only those who lose less than others. Toward the end I skimmed over parts. I knew without reading. Cut to the chase!
